Literacy Pirates is an ambitious, award-winning charity creating better outcomes in reading and writing for young people of Hackney whose backgrounds give them less opportunity and at the end of primary school are beginning to underachieve. Literacy Pirates is a teacher-led literacy programme that focuses on reading and writing skills and also increasing young peoples’ confidence and perseverance as learners. They make use of their network of over 500 volunteers to give one-to-one attention at each after-school sessions given in our unconventional learning environment. The Fore funded the strengthening of the organisation’s administration for a year in order to support the core team focus on delivery and development of Literacy Pirates’ growing programmes.
