Partnership Case Studies

Helping a couple take their first steps into Venture Philanthropy

A couple came to us looking to find a new way to give. They wanted to learn more about Venture Philanthropy funding through following a small number of charities to see the impact this can have in practice and decide whether it was right for them.

First, we worked closely with them to understand their interests and ambitions, before curating a tailored shortlist of exceptional charities aligned with their priorities.

From there, they selected two charities they wanted follow the progress of. Through in-depth annual and ad-hoc progress updates, they were able to get a better understanding of the Venture Philanthropy model.

Alongside this, they became part of our wider community of funders, with access to training, insights and connections that helped build their confidence in giving.

The result was a more informed, engaged approach to giving and a confident first step into venture philanthropy.

Supporting a Family Foundation to provide catalytic grants addressing poverty

A family came to us looking to take a more active role in their giving. They wanted to start building a portfolio, beginning with funding a catalytic grant to a high-potential charity tackling poverty, and getting the whole family involved.

First, we worked closely with them to understand their interests, before curating a tailored shortlist of exceptional charities aligned with their priorities.

From there, we facilitated a family-led selection process across three generations, giving them a hands-on role in choosing the charity they wanted to support.

Once selected and funded, regular, in-depth updates on the charity’s progress and impact, and opportunities to build a relationship with the charity’s leader, allow the family to see their impact first-hand.

Donation size: £52,000 each year

Working with a Family Foundation to Create a Bespoke Portfolio

A family foundation came to us wanting to do more than just give – they wanted to build a meaningful legacy in the South West by finding and backing the best grassroots charities in their area.

We applied our industry leading due diligence model to create a bespoke grant programme and find the best organisations making change in their community.

After assessing over 150 small charities across the South West and helping them shape their applications into robust business plans, the family were invited to take part in a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style funding panel to make decisions on who would receive support.

From there, we made introductions between the family and the charity leaders they’d backed so they could see their impact in action. What’s more, regular updates and tailored reporting meant they could be confident they were on track to achieve the targets they set out in their application.

The result is a high-impact, locally focused portfolio and a more confident, hands-on approach to giving.

Donation size: £156,000 (covers three grants and wraparound support package) +5% admin fee
